What’s Happening On I-26

Asheville Summer Updates 2022

If you’ve traveled on I-26 between Brevard Road to US-25, you have noticed the huge road-widening project happening on this 18-mile stretch of highway. It began in October 2019 and is scheduled to be complete by May 2024. I-26 will go from four lanes to eight from just north of Brevard Road in Buncombe County to U.S. 64 in Hendersonville, and then from four to six lanes from U.S. 64 to U.S. 25.

Even though the project has involved multiple lane shifts, Jersey barrels on either side of construction zones, and thirteen new bridges, traffic has been minimally affected. For the new bridges, workers have been able to leave the old bridges up and operational while they constructed the new ones. The only exception was the bridge for Butler Bridge Road, which had to be built in the same place as the old bridge. That road had to be closed and the bridge removed, and that part of the project lasted 179 days.

So far, about 70-80 detours have taken place since construction started. Motorists don’t like detours, but typical increased travel time has only been 5-7 minutes. Therefore, even though the construction on I-26 can be inconvenient, we are glad our local government officials are trying to keep the hassle at a minimum. And we look forward to the new, wider highway stretch that will be complete by 2024!
