As summer winds down, it's the perfect time to sneak in a few more adventures before cooler weather rolls in and we get back to “real life”. Whether you’re an Asheville local or considering making the move, these easy day trips offer a taste of everything Western North Carolina has to offer—majestic views, cool mountain waters, and charming small towns. Here are five of our favorite late-summer getaways, all just a short drive from Asheville.
1. Lake James State Park – Swim, Kayak, and Picnic by the Water
📍 ~45-55 minutes from Asheville | Nebo, NC
No matter what kind of outdoor adventure you’re seeking, Lake James is a must. With ample hiking and biking trails, sandy beaches, and boat rentals, Lake James State Park offers a peaceful escape from the city heat. It’s family-friendly, dog-approved, and ideal for unplugging.
Pro tip: Check Swim Guide before you go to get current swimming conditions.
2. Waynesville – Small-Town Charm + Big Mountain Views
📍 40 minutes from Asheville
Waynesville is one of those places that feels like stepping into a postcard. Browse locally owned shops downtown, grab lunch at Frog Level Brewing or The Sweet Onion, and don’t miss the view from the Blue Ridge Parkway on your way there or back. If you’re into antiques or gallery hopping, you’ll find plenty to love whether you’re at the Cornerstore Mercantile or at Twigs & Leaves Gallery.
Bonus stop: Check out Lake Junaluska for a serene walk or paddleboarding session.
3. Max Patch – Panoramic Mountain Picnic Spot
📍 1 hour 15 minutes from Asheville
If wide-open skies and epic views are your thing, Max Patch won’t disappoint. This bald mountain meadow along the Appalachian Trail offers 360° views and is one of the most photogenic spots in WNC. It’s perfect for a short hike followed by a picnic or a peaceful sunset.
Important: The road to Max Patch is gravel—take it slow and make sure to check trail conditions on AllTrails before heading out.
4. Black Mountain – Coffee, Crafts, and Cozy Vibes
📍 25 minutes from Asheville
Looking for a low-key day with lots of local flavor? Black Mountain is a gem. Wander through unique boutiques, sip coffee from Dripolator, and take a step back in time at the Town Hardware & General Store. It’s a great spot for art lovers and casual strollers alike.
Weekend favorite: Catch live music or local food trucks at Black Mountain Brewing.
5. The Orchard at Altapass – Apples, Music, and Mountain Air
📍 1 hour 10 minutes from Asheville | Spruce Pine, NC
August marks the start of apple season, and The Orchard at Altapass is a delightful way to spend the day. Located right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, this spot has live mountain music, heritage storytelling, dancing, and—you guessed it—apple picking. It’s quirky, nostalgic, and full of Appalachian charm.
Pro tip: Plan your visit around peak ripeness of your favorite apple variety!
